Level description and overview of language exams

German level A1

  • He/she understands often used everyday expressions and basic phrases enabling everyday satisfaction of basic living needs and knows how to use such phrases and expressions.
  • Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • He/she can easily converse, if the person with whom he/she is speaking speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help him/her.
  • Skřivánek language levels: total beginner.

General German exam for adults at level A1

  • minimum number of guided learning hours: approximately 80 - 200
  • the exam includes:
    • listening (20 minutes)
    • reading (25 minutes)
    • writing (20 minutes)
    • oral testing (15 minutes, conducted in a group of candidates)

General German exam for children from age 10 to 16 at level A1

  • minimum number of guided learning hours: approximately 80 - 200
  • the exam includes:
    • listening (20 minutes)
    • reading (20 minutes)
    • writing (20 minutes)
    • oral testing (15 minutes, conducted in pairs)

ÖSD Zertifikat A1 (ÖSD ZA1)

general German exam at level A1 for candidates from 14 years of age

  • minimum number of completed instruction hours: approximately 100-150 hours
  • the exam includes:
    • reading (25 minutes)
    • listening (approximately 10 minutes)
    • writing (20 minutes)
    • oral testing (approximately 10 minutes)

ÖSD Zertifikat A1 / Österreich

General German exam at level A1 for candidates from 14 years of age. This exam is designed for immigrants to Austria.

The exam includes:

  • reading (25 minutes)
  • listening (approximately 10 minutes)
  • writing (20 minutes)
  • oral testing (approximately 10 minutes)

The exam includes:

  • reading (30 minutes)

  • minimum number of guided learning hours: at least two guided learning hours a week for at least two years
  • the exam includes:
    • listening (10 minutes)
    • reading and writing (30 minutes)
    • oral testing (15-20 minutes, conducted in pairs)

Standardized exam JASPEX - level A1

Standardized exam tests knowledge of the German language at level A1

The exam includes:

  • a written test - reading comprehension, listening, use of language and writing (65 minutes)
  • an oral test (approximately 10-15 minutes)
